To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Kaci Richards and I am writing this letter on behalf of the My Brother‘s Bullpen, a new charity that has been established in honor of my brother. We are holding our 1st annual “Wiffle for Watty” wiffleball tournament this summer. This tournament, honoring my brother who passed unexpectedly at the age of 16 last year, is being held to raise funds for a scholarship at Avon Middle High School and for Children’s Hospital Boston where Nick spent much time battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
This event will be held at the Crowley Field in Avon, Ma., and families, friends, and local businesses in the community will be there. We are looking at approximately 200 people. We are looking for businesses to sponsor a team in the tournament. This would include your company’s name displayed on the team’s uniform shirt, or a banner representing your company hanging at the field. The minimum cost to sponsor a team is $150.00. Also, in lieu of a financial donation, we’d be happy to accept any donation in form of items or services. Other items that we are in need of are listed at the bottom of this letter. I know we are living in a difficult economy to be requesting donations, however any help you would be able to give us would be greatly appreciated. We hope to be able to commemorate Nick’s life by holding this memorial tournament every year, an event that will raise money for educational scholarships at the high school Nicolas attended, but never had the chance to graduate, as well as to support Children’s Hospital research, hoping to impact the lives of children living with cancer.
Once again, We are asking for your moral, financial, and emotional support. Anything you can offer to this great cause will be truly and greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Kaci Richards

Nick & Kaci

Nick’s Story…
My little brother, Nicolas Watson, began his difficult battle in August 2010 when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at age 15. Nick had been struggling with unexplained  back pain for the previous two years. He had been to over 10 doctors, most of whom told him there was nothing wrong. Finally, the amazing doctors at Children’s Hospital in Boston gave us an answer. They diagnosed Nicolas with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. While this type of blood cancer usually has a pretty good prognosis, the Stage 4 status worried Nick’s doctors. Although this was not the news Nick was hoping for, he was ready to face this battle. Nick spent much of the next year essentially living out of Children’s Hospital. Three months of chemotherapy and numerous blood transplants later, Nick was informed that his cancer had returned. Nick was devastated that he would have to endure 3 more long months of chemotherapy. Doctor’s also decided it would be best for Nick to undergo a bone marrow transplant to increase his prognosis. Throughout this awful process, Nick kept a smile on his face, always befriending and laughing with his wonderful Children’s Hospital nurses. They were amazed by Nick’s positive attitude during this horrible time. Nick was sure he was going to beat this cancer and didn’t let it get him down.
After a long year, Nick finished his last chemotherapy and was declared in remission in August 2011. He had spent the summer not being able to leave his house or be in any public places to avoid contact with germs. Finally, on August 8, 2011, Nick was able to be reunited with friends and begin rebuilding his life. Unfortunately, two days later on August 10, 2011, Nicolas was tragically killed in a car accident at the young age of 16 years old.
Nicolas was one of the most caring and loving teenagers. He spent much of his spare time visiting with his grandparents, and even while at Children’s he was always buying thank you gifts for his nurses. Nicolas was a one of a kind young man who is truly missed. Prior to Nick’s awful struggles, his first love was baseball. Nick once hit a homerun in a playoff tournament with a broken finger.  Nick has served as an inspiration to all who knew him. His never-give-up attitude and his positive outlook were so contagious. We have decided  that a Wiffle Ball Tournament would be a perfect idea to raise money, awareness, and to honor Nick’s legacy. The money will be used to offer a scholarship at Avon Middle High School, where Nick would have been a senior this fall. Donations will also be made to Avon Little League, which Nick had played for since he was five years old.
Most importantly, donations will also be made to Children’s Hospital in Boston to benefit kids with cancer. For the last year of his life, Nick essentially considered Children’s Hospital his “Home away from home”. Nick spent much time there and formed wonderful relationships with his nurses, doctors, and other amazing staff members and patients. Children’s Hospital and The Make-A-Wish Foundation did all they could to keep Nick’s spirits high at such a difficult time. The Hospital allowed us to celebrate Nick’s 16th birthday by giving us a large room for his family to visit. They made him signs and balloons and let us take Nick for a walk around their beautiful grounds. The Make-A-Wish Foundation re-did the basement in Nick’s Avon house, complete with a replicated wall mural of Fenway Park’s Green Monster, with scores from Jon Lester‘s no-hitter, who also battled Lymphoma. Nick was so excited to have a place to hang out with friends and family and watch his favorite Boston teams: the Red Sox, Bruins, and Patriots. Unfortunately, Nick passed before his room was even finished. Nick was so grateful for everything Children’s Hospital and the Make-A-Wish Foundation did for him. We couldn’t think of a better way to honor Nick than to contribute to such an amazing foundation that made the difficult last year of Nick’s life as positive and bright as it could be.
